6 Non-Medical Uses of X-Ray Technology


Though we tend to think of X-rays only as a medical function, there are many more than that. These non-medical uses of X-ray technology are hard at work and help in everyday settings.

1. Security Devices: This is likely the most notable use of x-ray technology that we are all exposed to at some point in time. This has received a lot of attention lately with the advances in the machines and devices that help security officers to inspect what you are carrying with you. These are used most often at airports, but we also see them at federal buildings like police headquarters, courts, and even sporting venues. This ensures that weapons are not carried in and helps to keep people at that venue safe. This is a great use of X-rays and is one that will likely continue to grow.

2. Consumer Testing Devices: This is another use that may not be as publicized but is a very widely used application. The manufacturing environment uses X-ray to ensure that parts are where they are supposed to be and that things are working properly. Just as you would use an X-ray to see what’s going on within a person, this type of X-ray ensures that you see what’s going on within a product or that something is safe for consumers to use in their everyday life.

3. Film/Motion Pictures: Though you may not realize it, the technology at work within X-rays is being used in the creation of films as well. This is still a work in progress but the X-ray technology is being utilized within the creation and production of films used in motion pictures. Not every movie studio is there yet, but this is becoming a trend that many can expect to utilize in the future. It may prove to be cost effective and helpful to those within the industry, and is therefore expected to gain popularity.

4. Industrial Imaging: This is another area where a manufacturing environment may be well served by using X-ray technology. This is most notable in environments that use welding at their core or in their application. This ensures that the parts are welded properly and that the assembly is as it is intended to be. Therefore this is a great application that is quickly catching on within this type of environment.

5. Scientific Discovery: Scientists above and beyond the medical community are using X-ray to see how their projects are improving. This helps to stay on track and helps to uncover things that may not have otherwise been able to be viewed. Therefore X-ray technology and science go hand in hand and ensure that new advances are made all the time.

6. Quality Control: Many environments that require high end quality control measures are utilizing X-ray. They are finding that this helps to pick up where humans leave off and shows that products are in fact going out as they should be. This ensures that there are not recalls or product issues that may present problems later on.

These uses of X-ray technology may not be as notable, but they are well used. This technology continues to grow and evolve all the time, and will likely always do so.
